Table Mountain

Nothing dominates a visit to Cape Town as much as Table Mountain, which is every bit as impressive as you've heard, maybe more so:


It reminded me more than a little bit of Masada -- it's similarly shaped, and like Masada is accessible by cable car or long hiking trail. But it's about twice as high (over 3,000 feet) and of course doesn't have any Roman ruins.

The views from the top are stunning, of course, with the city to one side and wilderness to the other:




The top is a popular park, as you'd expect, but I didn't quite expect the casual approach to danger that is on view. If you want to go climbing out among the sheer cliffs, there is nothing to stop you (and in fact, the place is apparently notorious for suicides). This boy posed for what indeed turned out to be a very nice photograph:



But pull back for a wider angle and you can see how scary the pose really is:


Fortunately, he, and we, survived.
